A Birthday Whale for Maya

Whale, pink it is.

What could be more fitting than a pink whale and purple umbrellas for Maya.  We all know how much little girls enjoy pink and purple.  I think that it is a given.  Maybe that’s why we ladies of a certain age can’t get enough purple in our wardrobe.

Before I continue though, I would like to boast a bit.  I wrote an article for Ezine titled, “Where do I start to design a hand-crafted card?” and it has now been published.  You can check out HERE

Now, back to the birthday whale.

This card uses 2 stamp sets from the Spring Catalogue which will expire on May 31st.  So if there is something that you really want, hop on over to my ON-LINE STORE to order or send me an EMAIL.  I will be placing an order at the end of the month.

Birthday Whale

Stamps: Rain or Shine (c – 126777, w- 126775, p30 2013 Spring Catalogue), Oh, Whale! (c – 129132, w- 129129, p29 2013 Spring Catalogue), Family Reunion (c – 122712, w- 122710, p138 2012/13 Annual Catalogue)

Paper: Whisper White, Marina Mist, Primrose Petals, Sunshine and Sprinkles DSP, Subtle DSP Stack

Ink: Marina Mist, Perfect Plum, Primrose Petals

Accessories: Big Shot, Happy Whale Clearlits Die, Tasteful Trim Bigz XL Die, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Pearl Jewels

The umbrellas from the Rain or Shine stamp set were stamped with Perfect Plum on Perfect Plum DSP from the Subtles Designer Series Pack and then fussy cut with the Paper Snips.  Both the umbrella handles and the water spouts ( ok one is an alphabet spout) were aligned to the whale with the Stamp-a-ma-jig. The Stamp-a-ma-jig is a handy tool for two-step stamping and can be used for both the clear mount and the wood mount stamps.

So that’s it for today, Happy 4th Birthday Maya.

Happy Stamping

A Birthday Card for a Special Person

A birthday is something to celebrate especially when you reach the age of 89.  Can you just imagination the number of changes in the world in 89 years.

Some of these are the digital age, with computers, tablets, cell phones and the man on the moon.  The one thing that has always remained constant for my Dad is his family and his undying loyalty to the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team.  He has never wavered once in that loyalty even when they have not won a Stanley Cup since I don’t know when.  It was always Hockey Night in Canada in Saturdays at our house.

One of the things my Dad loved to do was go fishing.  So when I saw the “By The Tide” stamp set in the Spring 2013 catalogue, I envisioned his birthday card.

I had so much fun with this card, adapting the Petite Purse die so that I could use it as a fishing pack.  I’m not sure what type of fish this is but I heat embossed it with Silver Embossing Powder on Sahara Sand and then sponged it with Cajun Craze, Crumb Cake and Baja Breeze inks.  Of course, there was the fussy cutting to go along with it.

One of the techniques I just love is masking and sponging.  You can make such great scenes and I tried to create a river bank and the sky by using a cloud template and then using the Cloudy Day embossing folder and different colours of browns for the river bank.

Clear Mount #129120, Wood Mount #129117

Stamps: By the Tide (c – 129120, w- 129117, p129 2013 Spring Catalogue), Family Reunion (c – 122712, w- 122710, p138 2012/13 Annual Catalogue) Pretty Petites

Paper: Sahara Sand, Naturals White, Crumb Cake, Print Poetry DSP Stack

Ink: Island Indigo, Marina Mist, Chocolate Chip, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso, Summer Starfruit

Accessories: Big Shot, Petite Purse Die, Cloudy Day Embossing Folder, Lattice Embossing Folder,  Woodgrain Embossing Folder, Versamark, Silver Embossing Powder, Linen Thread, Gold Metallic Brad, Markers: Early Espresso, Island Indigo, Real Red, Daffodil Delight, Sponge Dabbers, Sponges

Before I close this post off, I have something to say about what happened at the finish line at the Boston Marathon.  My heart and thoughts go out to those who lost their lives and those who were tragically injured.

Yesterday, we had another change in our lives caused by thoughtless people who planted bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.  How tragic, as a number of people were killed and many injured and others scarred for life.  What possesses these types of people to cause havoc on others lives?  What are they trying to prove?  What type of vendetta could possibly be so strong as to comment an offense against innocents.

Why can’t we just all get along?  Why do people consider themselves to be more right than others.  I don’t have the answers.  I just hope the authorities find the person or people responsible for the despicable act.

Pardon my rant but I am getting really tired of being help hostage by others.

Stamping Poppies and Other Flowers Help To Make It Spring

Stamping poppies and flowers makes me feel like Spring even though the weather here is COLD!  I know that in other areas, people are experiencing more winter and the snow just doesn’t seem to want to go away.

Does anyone feel like this?

Spring Failed

Actually, I used a fun technique on this card and I am really happy as to how it turned out.  Instead of using card stock to stamp the image on, I used the Canvas Creations.  Hmm, maybe I always wanted to be Van Gogh, or Picasso, or???  – Not. But I did want to try out this new product from Stampin’ Up!’s Spring Catalogue.

Stamping Poppies

Stamps: Pleasant Poppies (c – 129499, w- 126480, p129 2012/13 Annual Catalogue), Family Reunion (c – 122712, w- 122710, p138 2012/13 Annual Catalogue

Paper: Calypso Coral, Tea for Two

Accessories: Big Shot, Finishing Touches Edgelits, Versamark, White Embossing Powder, Clear Embossing Powder, Canvas Creations, Markers: Calypso Coral, Lucky Limeade, Daffodils Delight, Silver Designer Buttons, Calypso Coral Baker Twine

As I was writing up the recipe, I noticed that I didn’t use any ink except for Versa Mark, and I’m not sure that this is considered really ink.

Anyway back to the technique:   I stamped the poppies using Versamark onto the canvas and then embossed them with White Embossing powder.  Then, I got out the markers and went to town colouring.  I really like the effect that the canvas gives and with the embossing the ink from the markers are resisted from the canvas.

Just a reminder that the Spring catalogue is around for another 6 weeks and when it goes, so does the Canvas Creations.

Canvas Creations Stamping

So, get out your flower stamps and stamp up a little bit of Spring .

PS, did you see or hear about the colour renovation that Stampin’ Up! has in store for us in 2013?

Magic is so illusive and can come in many forms. The main question when there is magic, is “HOW DID THEY DO THAT”!

I love to create magic for my customers and today, I am going to let you in on a few of my secrets.

One of the most important things in my business is providing  customers with good customer service.  How do I do that?  It’s about answering their questions, giving them timely and valuable information on products and promotions, and showing them how to make WOW projects.

And how do I do those things…sending out a jammed packed monthly newsletter, updating my blog with projects, providing videos that show them how to use different tools and of course there are those ever important techniques.

Are you on my email list so that you receive those jammed packed newsletters?  If not, then click HERE and fill out the form.  And for you time,  you will also receive a thank you gift.

Another way I like to add magic for my customers is showing them how to make their own magic through creating projects, whether it’s cards, scrapbooks, decor items and/or gift packaging.

So here is another secret, showing how to take a simple, pretty card and adding a few more elements and making it a WOW card.

The first card is a clean and simple card and at the same time pretty and would be suitable for any occasion.

Ciao Baby simple to magic

The next card is a stepped-up version which some additional elements and products used.

WOW card with magic

What do you think? You find the magic in this card?

Stamps: Collage Curios (c – 129102, w- 129099, p24 2013 Spring Catalogue), Loving Thoughts (c – 122712, w- 122710, p138 2012/13 Annual Catalogue), Loving Thoughts (c – 125845, w- 125843, p136 2012/13 Annual Catalogue)

Paper: Whisper White, Basic Grey, Rich Razzleberry, Summer Starfruit, Sycamore Street DSP.

Ink: Melon Mambo, Summer Starfruit, Basic Grey,

Accessories: Summer Starfruit Dahlia, Summer Starfruit 1/4” Stitched Grosgrain Ribbon, Punches: 1-3/4” Scallop Circle, 1-1/4” Scallop Circle, Scallop Edge Border, 7/8” Scallop Circle, 3/4” Circle.

So what’s different?

On the second card, the 3/4″ circle punch was swapped out for the 7/8″ Scallop Punch, the Basic Grey card stock, ribbon and flower were  added, and all the circles were sponged with Summer Starfruit ink.  The flower was punched from Rich Razzleberry card stock using the 7/8″ scallop punch, distressed and separated into two layers and the Dahlia added to the center.  Finally the sentiment was stamped on a Whisper White flag.

The 1-1/4″ circle punch is carried over from the Holiday Catalogue and is still available

The Artisan Kit which has 26 embellishments that can be used to add charm and sophistication to your projects.

What’s in the Artisan Kit?

  1. 2 designer tags
  2. 4 designer ticket stubs, 18″ scalloped lace
  3. 18″ cotton lace
  4. 18″large oval lace

  6. 6 paper flowers
  7. 1 resin heart
  8. 2 resin flowers
  9. 5 buttons
  10. 1 heart paper doily
  11. 1 round paper doily

What type of projects can be used with the Artisan Kit?  This kit can be used for a  birthday card, or a wedding card, anniversary card, and also gift packaging and even scrapbooking.

Here is an example of how I used the Artisan kit to make a Birthday card and matching packaging for the gift.

 Purse (gift packaging)

Accessories: Big Shot, Lacy Brocade Embossing Folder, Petite Purse Bigz Die, Artisan Kit, Primrose Dalia.

The focal point of the card features a flattened Soda Pop Top (yes, you can run them through the Big Shot).  The images from the Collage Curios stamp set were stamped, punched out and glued into the Soda Pop Top with Crystal Effects.  The whole image was covered with Crystal Effects to give it the resin effect.

The closure for the purse was made using one of the buttons from the Artisan Kit and a Dalia attached to the center.

Have you ever tried the Core’dination Papers?  These papers give a different effect from the standard card stock.  The outside layers are standard Stampin’ Up! colours and the inside layer is a monochromatic colour.  When you distress or emboss this paper, the inside layer is revealed to give a different look.

The last card in the Sale-a-Bration series features the stamp set By The Tide.

By The Tide

Supplies:

Stamps: By The Tide (c – 129120, w- 129117, p19 2013 Spring Catalogue), Fabulous Phrases ((c – 120501, w- 117002, p133 2012/13 Annual Catalogue)

Paper: Whisper White, Island Indigo, Sahara Sand, Tea for Two DSP

Ink: Island Indigo, Pretty in Pink, Sahara Sand

Accessories: Versamark, White Embossing Powder, Naturals 7/16” Trim Ribbon, Silver Basics Designer Button, 1-1/4” Scallop Circle Punch, 1-3/8” Circle Punch, Linen Thread

Tools: Big Shot, Chevron Embossing Folder, Heat Tool, Multipurpose Adhesive, Sticky Tape, Glue Dots, Dimensionals.

Instructions:

  1. Cut Sahara Sand card stock 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ and score at 4-1/4″
  2. Cut Island Indigo card stock 5-1/4″ x 4″.  Run through Big Shot using the Chevron Embossing Folder.
  3. Cut Tea for Two DSP – 4-3/4″ x 3-1/2″
  4. Cut Whisper White card stock 4-1/2″ x 3-1-3/4″ and 2″ x 2″
  5. Create background on the larger panel of Whisper White card stock
    1. Randomly stamp sea shells on Whisper White card stock using Pretty in Pink and Sahara Sand ink.  Stamp off ink before applying to card stock or the background will be too dark
  6. Ink the fern image with Versamark ink and stamp 2 images along bottom of Whisper White card stock – The whole image does not have to be on the card stock. Sometimes it is more effective to have only a partial image.
  7. Heat emboss with White Embossing powder.
  8. Ink fish image with Island Indigo ink and stamp one image over the embossed fern and the other higher on the left and one that goes off the card stock on the left.  When ink is dry, clean the embossed fern with a soft cloth to remove and excess ink.  This will give the illusion as though the fish is behind the fern.
  9. Stamp 3 sentiments from the Fabulous Phrases stamp set with Island Indigo ink onto Whisper White card stock.  Make sure that the words will fit within the 1-1/4″ scallop punch.  Punch out and mount on Island Indigo which has been punched with the 1-3/8″ Circle Punch.

Assemble:

  1. Cut a piece of Naturals Trim Ribbon – 5″ and attach to Island Indigo panel on the left.  Use Sticky Tape to attach.
  2. Attach the panel to the card base.
  3. Attach the focal panel to the Tea for Two DSP using Multipurpose Adhesive.
  4. Attach these two panels to the Island Indigo panel  using Sticky Tape- offset to the right.
  5. Thread a piece of Linen Thread through the Silver button..  Thread from the underside of the button so that the thread will cross on the front of the button.
  6. Attach the button using Glue Dots
  7. Attach the sentiment to the Island Indigo circle with Multipurpose Glue and attach to left side of card with Dimensionals.
  8. Place in an envelope and send or give to someone to brighten their day!

The By the Tide stamp set could be used as invitations to a Lobster Feed Party, or a birthday card for a fisher person, or on a scrapbook page to record your sea-side vacation.  The possibilities are endless – these are just a few.

Pop ‘n Cuts Dies for the Big Shot are a great way to show case your Mother’s Day cards. I am just loving this new die, the matching All Dressed Up stamp set and the framelits.

There are so many ideas that you can incorporate for the front of the card and then it’s easy to also decorate the inside of the card.  So often we forget about the inside.  So for display purposes, the recipient of the card has the choice to either display the front or the inside.

Flowers are always a favourite gift for Mother’s Day and so why not put them on the front of the card. They will last for a very long time and bring back the memories of the gift and the celebrations of Mother’s Day.  What about Easter?  There is a lily image in this set that would be perfect for an Easter card and then there is the daisy to celebrate Spring.  The possibilities are endless with this stamp set.

Scret Garden with Pop 'n Cuts

Card Front

I used a great technique on this card to make the flowers appear to be delicate and airy.  First the flower images were stamped with Versamark on Sahara Sand and embossed with White Embossing Powder.  After the flowers were cut using the Secret Garden Die Cuts, the petals were painted with Whisper White Craft ink and the Aqua Painter.  You will need to let the craft ink dry but if you are impatient, use your Heat Gun.

Next, using the markers and the Blender Pens to color the petals.  It is fairly easy to shade the petals where the shadows may lie.  Start with the dark colour and then blend out to the middle and end of the petal.

All Dressed Up Pop 'n Cuts

Card Inside

The sweater was cut using the All Dressed Up Framelit and cropping the bottom part of the dress and cutting down the middle and adhering to the dress.  Rhinestones were added for some bling and of course a flower punched with the Itty Bitty Punch Pack and a rhinestone in the middle sets off the full outfit.  Ohhlala!!

Stamps: Secret Garden (c – 129144, w- 129141, p17 2013 Spring Catalogue),

Paper: Whisper White, Pool Party, Island Indigo, Sahara Sand, Lucky Limeade, Sycamore Street DSP

Ink: Whisper White Craft, Island Indigo, Lucky Limeade

Accessories: Big Shot, Secret Garden Framelit Dies, Card Base Pop ‘n Cuts , Dress Form Pop ‘n Cuts, Dress Up Framelits, Lattice Bigz Die, Little Leave Sizzlits, Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder,  Versamark, White Embossing Powder, Markers: Island Indigo, Calypso Coral, Summer Starfruit, Itty Bitty Punch Pack, Rhinestones, Blender Pen, Aqua Painter.

Yes, Sale-a-Bration is quickly coming to an end.  Only 2 Weeks left to get your Free Product because on March 22, 2013, Sale-a-Bration goes away for another year.

This is week 8 for the projects created with products from the Spring 2013 Catalogue and the Sale-a-Bration flyer.

This week, I have combined 2 stamp sets that go very nicely together to create a whimsical card, the  Rain and Shine stamp set and the Bootiful Occasions stamp set.  Ever since I saw the Bootiful Occasions stamp set, I knew I had to have it because there are 4 really cute stamps for several different occasions and you can just have fun creating with them.

Purchase Bootiful Occasions for credit toward Sale a Bration

This project also used the Masking Technique on the boots

  5. Ink the rubber boot image with Melon Mambo and stamp on the Post-it Note.  Cut out the boot using your Paper Snips

  7. Remove the Post-it Note and you can see two boots, one behind the other.
  8. Stamp one of the umbrellas from the Rain or Shine stamp set on Whisper White card stock using Marina Mist ink and stamp the umbrella handle using Early Espresso ink.  Fussy cut both with your Paper Snips.

  11. Cut a strip of the Sunny and Sprinkles DSP – 1″ x 4″.  Cut the ends into a V shape.

To Assemble Card

  1. Build the Vellum panel first so you know where to put your adhesive

  3. Attach the DSP strip to the bottom of the Cloudy Day embossed framelit
  4. Lay the Marina Mist Ribbon over the DSP strip
  5. Attach the boots using Dimensionals

  9. Color the “rain and shine” words with the Lucky Limeade marker, huff and stamp on a piece of Whisper White.  Trim to make a flag and attach to the card.
  10. Attach all panels to Marina Mist card base.

Dressed Up?  Yes, Stampin’ Up! released a brand new die cut in their Spring 2013 catalogue.  It’s the Pop ‘n Cuts to be used with the All Dressed Up stamp and framelit dies.  It’s like playing dress up and cut out dolls at the same time.  The grown up version.

The card base Pop ‘n’ Cuts is magnetic and you can insert the Pop ‘n Cuts Dress Form inside the base to cut a fun pop-up card.

Once you get the base and the dress form assembled you can make a multitude of different dresses with the All Dressed Up stamp set and framelit dies.  Change out the card stock, the designer series papers and the ink and you have a whole new dress.  How about adding some embellishments to make them look like accessories, a ribbon for a belt, rhinestones and pearls for necklaces, or a flower pin to wear on the dress.

The possibilities are endless!

What’s also neat about this Pop ‘n Cuts base is that you can use it on its own to make different types of cards and fancy folds.

Plus by using your imagination you can create other types of pop-up using the mechanism from the Dress Form Pop ‘n Cuts Die.  Maybe a Birthday Cake that pops out, or a bouquet of flowers.  What other types of things can you think of?

I have made a couple of different types of cards and I will share over the next week or so.

This is the first one:

March is International Craft Month and so now us crafters have an excuse.  Do we really need one to go and dig out those stamps, papers, inks, embellishment and hide out in our crafty world.  I know I don’t need Craft Month as an excuse but hey, whatever works.

What is that you love about crafting?  Is the ability to get creative, or  wanting to preserve your memories, or creating something with a purpose in mind, or it is just because you like crafting.  There are tons more reasons to craft and I will leave it up to you to use your imagination and come up with a few of your own reasons.

Crafting for me is a wonderful pastime and I don’t know where I would be without it.  I have crafted for years in various forms from embroidery, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, scrapbooking, Artex painting (remember that craze?), jewelry making, ceramics, and now stamping.  I think I may have missed a few.  Some of them I learned from my Mother (much to her chagrin at times) and others are self taught and some I took classes.

We know that “Chicken Soup” is good for the soul and maybe someone needs to write a book on “Crafting is Good for the Soul”.  Hmmm, do I hear an idea?

I do have a craft to show today and of course it’s a card.  The card is one that I did for my DIL and as she is a crafter too, she understood the passion that went into her card and the package that her gift was in.

Stamps: Best of Birthdays (c – 132929 25th Anniversary Stamps), Memorable Moments (c – 1266982, w- 126680, p.139 2012/2013 Annual Catalogue)

Check out the link so you can see the stamps that Stampin’ Up! has released so far this year for their 25th Anniversary.

Paper: Naturals White, Sahara Sand, Tea for Two DSP, Vellum

Ink: Calypso Coral, So Saffron, Lucky Limeade, Whisper White Craft

Accessories: Big Shot, Ovals Collection Framelits, Early Espresso Bakers Twine, Tea Time Trinkets, Versamark, Tangerine Tango Embossing Powder, Tea Lace Paper Doilies, Vanilla Flower Trim, Crystal Effects, Markers: Lucky Limeade and Calypso Coral,  Other: White Acrylic Paint

The front panel was sponged in a few spots with Calypso Coral and a mixture of the White Acrylic Paint and some Crystal Effects was smeared in places with a sponge brush.  The jury is still out on that treatment.

I also decorated in inside of the card (yes, went all out this time) and created the package for her gift using the Petite Purse Die (125606)

As you can see it was a Memorable Moments birthday.

Petite Purse Die

Petite Purse

I used a piece of the DSP to create the purse and added an embossed piece of Calypso Coral card stock.  I the flower is from the Very Vanilla Flower trim that I sprayed with So Saffron and then sponged the tips with Calypso Coral.  The leaves were cut using the BIg Shot and the Little Leaves Sizzlit Die.

I know that the packaging was small but the gift was huge in her eyes.

So that is my tribute to International Craft Month.

Leave me a comment and tell me what types of crafts you do or have done.
