Remembering the Fallen Heroes
Remembering the Fallen Heroes On November 11th
Remembering the fallen heroes on November 11th is something everyone needs to do. However, it is just not the fallen heroes, it is the ones who came home and the ones that continue to serve. Without these heroes we would not enjoy the freedoms that we have today.
The most famous poem was composed by “Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae ” during a battle in Belgium. The date was May 13, 1915. This poem is one of the reasons, the poppy became symbolic of Remembrance Day. The poem “In Flanders Field” was written as a result of the death of McCrae’s friend the day previous.
I don’t know about you, but i can still repeat the poem by memory, learned at a very young age.
IN FLANDERS FIELD
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
My father served during WWII and was a sailor in the Royal Canadian Navy. As a young child, myself and the rest of my family would attend the Remembrance Day ceremonies. My Dad is a proud Navy man and is very proud of the timed he served.
As conflicts continue in many parts of our world, we not only remember the fallen heroes but also those that continue to serve to keep us safe and free to express ourselves, free to go where we want, and free to choose.
The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day and if you are looking for a stamp, there is one in the 2013/14 Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalogue.
Take a moment on November 11 at 11:00am to remember.
Beautiful card, Karen and I love how you chose poppies to represent for this day and your memories! I remember as a child, we’d see the older soldiers giving them out as a token of gratitude.
Beautiful card Karen! Love the gorgeous image!
