Did you know that there is a thing called paper crafting trends?  Yes, just like trends in fashion, decor, vehicles, mobile devices, etc., there are paper crafting trends.

Remember the eyelets attached with a tool to the front of cards as an embellishment. Then, the vintage look for cards with torn edges, wrinkled ribbon, lace, and stamps that depicted antique phones, apothecary jars, and ornate sofas. The geometric look with triangles, squares, quatrefoil and other motifs were around for a couple of years.
